A Christian wedding in the Raipur district of Chhattisgarh, central India, descended into chaos after a mob—allegedly linked to Hindu nationalist groups—attacked guests and damaged property, according to local sources.
The violent incident took place on the evening of June 11 during the wedding of a relative of a local pastor. Eyewitnesses described the attack as sudden and unprovoked, forcing family members to lock themselves inside a house for safety. The bride reportedly fled into nearby fields, while the groom escaped in another direction.
During the attack, members of the mob attempted to set fire to a sport utility vehicle by pouring gasoline on its tires. Several other vehicles, including motorcycles and cars, were also vandalized, reports International Christian Concern (ICC).
Family members who sought help at the local police station were allegedly told that there was insufficient manpower to provide immediate protection.
The following morning, the groom’s father returned to the village to collect items left behind after the disrupted wedding. He was reportedly recognized by members of the same group and attacked again, along with two others. All three sustained serious injuries and required hospitalization.
Christian leaders in Chhattisgarh have expressed concern over what they describe as an increasingly hostile environment for believers. They warn that such attacks are no longer limited to church gatherings but are now affecting private family celebrations such as weddings and birthdays.
Similar patterns of harassment have also been reported in neighboring Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, where pastors have faced legal proceedings after being accused of attempting to convert others to Christianity—even while attending events like birthday parties.
Speaking on condition of anonymity due to safety concerns, several local Christian leaders said the community is living in fear. They accuse local authorities of failing to uphold constitutional protections and turning a blind eye to ongoing violence and intimidation.
No official statement has been issued by the authorities regarding the incident.
