Christian Tory candidate defends tax rise ban

David Burrowes was speaking after Prime Minister David Cameron said he would pass a law in the first 100 days of the next Parliament making it illegal to increase any of the three taxes, if the Conservatives win the general election on May 7.

The Labour Party has accused the pledge as a "desperate gimmick" before the election, and said David Cameron would fund his tax pledge by cutting tax credits and child benefit by £3.8bn.

"Our public finances were shred to pieces and now that they're back in order and we've reduced the deficit by half, we're in a position where structurally we can make this commitment and can fulfil it and put it in law," said David Burrowes on Premier's News Hour.

"We're second [in terms of GDP growth] across the Western world in terms of the economy, more [increase in] jobs than the rest of Europe put together, but we're still not out of the woods. Just a 0.3% increase in growth [between January and March] shows that we need to continue that plan and certainly not go back.

"Those same economists who were saying we're going to cut a million jobs in terms of having to bear down on the deficit... we managed to increase it now to two million, so the economy is on the right track... We're trying to make sure that we lock down clearly that we're not going to increase taxes," added Mr Burrowes.

David Cameron has said the policy would be funded by cutting government waste and welfare spending, and clamping down on tax evasion.

Labour has pledged to raise the top rate of income tax for earnings above £150,000 back to 50%, but has ruled out raising VAT or national insurance. Labour's also said it will tax properties worth over £2m, and create a new 10% starting tax rate.
