Christian teachers group calls for government clarification on how to deal with transgender issue

by Alex Collett

The Association of Christian Teachers (ACT) is raising concern over the lack of clarity in regard to how schools and their staff are expected to act on matters of gender identity.

Its executive officer has written to the government calling for immediate clarification and guidance on the law on equality in schools.

The group says it's urgent that more specific guidance is given to teachers on how to discuss gender identity within schools, and how to respond to students suffering with gender confusion.

Speaking to Premier, Lizzie Harewood from said: "We'd like the guidance for schools to be consistent with the NHS's new proposed evidence based approach, which recommends a watchful approach, which warns that the use of new names and pronouns could have significant effects on a child in terms of psychological functioning and also that observes that in most cases, gender dysphoria and gender incongruence does not persist into adolescence.

"At the moment, that seems to be very much a kind of, we will let schools make up their own mind and they're at liberty to have very different policies."

In a statement to Premier, the Department of Education said: "We are working to produce guidance for schools on transgender matters, given the complexity of the subject.

"We are planning to consult on the draft over the coming months and publish in 2023."

Ms Harewood is encouraging people to pray for students and teachers at this time: "Please pray for all teachers to have a compassionate response to any child or young person that is suffering with gender dysphoria or issues around that identity.

"Most Christian teachers firmly believe that schools should be places where children feel safe and where they can trust their teachers.

"We want teachers to show compassion and genuine care. Pray that teachers would have that care, and that they would be able to support in those kind of nuanced ways."
