Christian MSP backs English votes

by Antony Bushfield

Conservative Murdo Fraser has given his support to Commons Leader William Hague who has outlined plans to stop Scottish MPs influencing financial policies which only apply to England.

If the Tories are elected in May Mr Hague promised that policies affecting England alone would be scrutinised by a panel made up only of MPs representing English seats.

It would mean Labour, which has more than 60 seats outside of England, could find it harder to form a government.

But Mr Fraser said that was of no concern to him: "It was Labour which introduced devolution in the first place.

"They are the ones who legislated for a Scottish parliament and for the Welsh assembly.

"If they didn't properly think through the consequences of that when they set us down that route, that's not our problem."

There have been increasing calls for Scots MPs to be barred from voting on devolved issues like health and education since the independence referendum.

"People in England quite rightly resent Scots MPs who can't vote on these matters affecting their own constituents in Scotland but they can come to the House of Commons and vote on these matters as they affect the people in England who perhaps didn't vote for them," Mr Fraser added.
