Christian MP Gary Streeter: 'Boris is absolutely brilliant but he's also absolutely shambolic'

by Chantalle Edmunds

Conservative Christian MP Gary Streeter has given his reaction to Premier following Dominic Cummings' revelations about the Government's handling of the pandemic.

Mr Cummings, the Prime Minister's former top aide, spoke before MPs at a 7-hour committee hearing on Wednesday where he claimed Health Secretary Matt Hancock should have been fired - accusing him of deadly failings and repeatedly lying. He also said it was 'crackers' Boris Johnson was the Prime Minister.

Mr Streeter said Dominic Cummings lacked credibility: "Last summer when Dominic Cummings was in the headlines for all the wrong reasons for possibly breaking the lockdown rules, lots of constituents were telling me how unfit he was, to be so close to the Prime Minister. And now here, that very same person is giving evidence against the government. I think, going back to my old lawyer days, I think he might be described as a witness lacking credibility."

He added that one of the charges that can be levied against any government that Boris Johnson leads is "there's going to be an element of chaos."

"In the end the British people must decide whether they like the government and three weeks ago there was a massive election, I think 48 million people had the chance to vote and Boris had an astounding result, a great success. He can come across as being shambolic. My own view of him is he's absolutely brilliant, but he is also absolutely shambolic. And there will therefore always be bits and pieces happening around him that aren't professional that aren't sort of what you might expect.

"In the end, I think it gets to the right decisions. I think it gives a strong leadership. Let's face it, you know, he's delivered on Brexit, he's taken us into these strong agreements and so on. And now where are we in relation to our European fellow countries, we're miles ahead in terms of the vaccination rollout and that's saving 1000s of lives. So pay your money and take your choice."

Mr Streeter said that as Christians we should look at the Old Testament before passing judgement on our political leaders.

"Look at the Old Testament and see that even the great characters in the Old Testament, they are flawed human beings, Abraham, David, Solomon, everybody, you know, they made huge mistakes. So let's not expect anything different from our modern day masters. Jesus was perfect, but he's the only one in the whole of the Bible, everyone made mistakes. They were flawed. Secondly, let's remember that we are in fact, all human beings trying to do our best. Most people in politics are well motivated and want to make the country better. So let's get behind them and pray and sometimes we have to forgive unfortunate incidents like yesterday."
