Christian midwife: Church networks need to support new families

by Hannah Tooley

Annette Briely has been speaking after new research shows more than one in five parents are woken up seven to 10 times each night on average in the first six months of their baby's life.

The report from The Baby Show has found that more people in the UK are investing in paid help to assist them as they take on their new roles as parents.

"I imagine it's because they feel unsupported in general and want more input," Annette Briely told Premier.

She added that Christians have lots they can do to help new parents: "It's about doing the little things really.

"It's about pitching up to visit someone, but making sure you've rung first and not just pitched up on the doorstep.

"Respecting the fact a new family has a very different time frame in their daily life to people without small children.

"And maybe making a call and seeing if they can pop by the shops for a new family, or bring a meal, or be helpful in a constructive way."

Three quarters of the parents 1,000 parents asked said they get as little as four hours of sleep a night in the first six months of their baby's life.

Annette Briely said: "I think being part of a church family probably gives you a better social construct than if you're not part of that type of group, but I think that many, many people are very excited when a baby's born, quite rightly, and we can kind of think it's our right to go and visit a new family."
