Christian Leaders of Jerusalem condemn violence that has escalated in Holy Land

by Alex Collett

Christian Leaders have condemned the acts of violence that have occurred in the Holy Land in the last two weeks.

On Monday. April 4, the Patriarchs and Heads of the Churches of Jerusalem released a statement condemning the violence and expressed their condolences to the families of the victims, offering prayers and their closeness to them.

The statement follows another incident on April 2, when Israeli security forces killed three Islamic Jihad militants during a raid in the West Bank.

Within the statement they said: "We, the Patriarchs and Heads of Local Churches of Jerusalem, condemn and decry these and all acts of violence against every human person, and we offer our prayers and sympathies on behalf of the families and friends who grieve over the loss of their loved ones because of them.

"We also pray for the recovery of those who have been wounded as a result.

"Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: 'May they prosper who love you. Peace be within your walls, and security within your towers." (Psalm 122:6-7)

The Christian Leaders were explaining that the 'sudden increase in bloodshed' has happened due to tensions during the rare confluence of major religious festivals among the three Abrahamic faiths: Ramadan, Pesach, and Holy Week/Easter.

The Christian Leaders are calling upon the faithful within each of these three traditions to show forth the mutual respect and care for one's neighbour that is central to the teachings of each.

They also call on the overseeing of governmental authorities to exercise policies of religious tolerance, restraint of force, and de-escalation of conflict.
