A survey found that 73% of parents surveyed for Nationwide Savings stagger their leave from work with their partner to cover childcare over the holiday period, leaving less time for the whole family to enjoy time off together.
Katharine Hill from Care for the Family told Premier's News Hour it is building relationships that is important but admits that caring for children and working is a "juggle."
"Whether it's just mucking about at home or going away for a holiday, it's about spending that quality time together," she said: "We talk about quality and quantity time and it is both, it's often the quantity time that enables us to have the quality time."
The stats:
2,000 people asked by Nationwide Savings
- 73% stagger work leave with partner to cover childcare
- 25% made excuse to take child out of school for term time holiday
- 30% have been away without their partner in the past
- 81% of parents find it hard to get the time off
"Don't feel guilty, seize those moments and have lots of fun with your kids in the holidays," she said.
Three in ten parents also said they have had to go away on holiday without their partner before, with around one in 11 regularly doing so, due to work pressures.
Katharine Hill added: "If we look back at lot of the memories we have are the fun things we've done together, with our families, whatever shape or size they are.
"And that's the things that are important building those relationships, and spending time together over the summer enables us to do that."
