Christian golfer passes away at 30

by Kelly Valencia

Grayson Murray's parents confirmed his passing in a statement, urging people to be “kind to one another”.

The 30-year-old American golfer withdrew from a competition in Texas on Friday, a day before he was found dead.

Eric and Terry Murray said "life wasn't always easy" for their son and "although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now".

"We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone," Murray's parents said. "It’s surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but that we also have to acknowledge it to the world. It’s a nightmare," they continued.

Earlier this year, the professional golfer openly discussed his long-standing challenges with alcohol and mental health issues, coinciding with his victory at the Sony Open in Honolulu, Hawaii. He recounted his journey of personal growth, highlighting his achievement of sobriety, reestablishment on the PGA Tour, and engagement.

He also shared how his Christian faith had been instrumental in reshaping his life. In an interview with NBC Sports earlier this year, he said Jesus Christ had changed his life.

"Jesus Christ is first and foremost. Without him, none of this would be possible. And he's just given me a platform to write a new story. To write my own story. And I hope that everyone at home watching can get a little inspiration from me," he said.

"If I just help one person that's all it takes," he added.

His parents’ statement continued: "We have so many questions that have no answers. But one. Was Grayson loved? The answer is yes. By us, his brother Cameron, his sister Erica, all of his extended family, by his friends, by his fellow players and – it seems – by many of you who are reading this. He was loved and he will be missed.”

They concluded their statement by thanking the PGA Tour and "the entire world of golf for the outpouring of support".

"Please respect our privacy as we work through this incredible tragedy, and please honor Grayson by being kind to one another. If that becomes his legacy, we could ask for nothing else. Thank you."
