Christian charity warns app filters distort youngster's view on beauty

by Eno Adeogun

A report by the Nuffield Council on Bioethics has called for restrictions on online games that promote such ideals, recommending a ban on under 18 year olds from getting fillers, botox or plastic surgery except for medical reasons to also be introduced.

Emma Oliver, founder of Christian charity Friendly Development told Premier why young people can become enticed by plastic surgery.

She explained during News Hour: "They are vulnerable at that age, they're developing in so many way and these apps and different tools that are available are so attractive to them.

"They're full of bright colours and they're so attractive in many ways and all of a sudden we can get sucked into trying different things."

The current estimated value of the UK cosmetic procedures industry is £3.6bn, up from £720m a decade ago.

Oliver said using filters won't necessarily lead to young people wanting cosmetic surgery. However, she pointed out that in addition to other pressures young people endure to do with their body image - it could be a slippery slope towards a desire to alter their appearance.

"There's a balance to be found between where we have fun but then very quickly the balance can be tipped and all of a sudden we're distorting perception really. We're distorting the ideals of appearance and what beautiful is."
