Christian charity urges action on Burma sexual violence

Kachin is an ethnic group in Burma (Myanmar), and its people are mostly found within the northern Kachin State.

Maran Lu Ra, 20, and Tangbau Hkawn Nan Tsin, 21, were teachers from Myitkyina, the main city whin Kachin State. They were working with the Kachin Baptist Convention.

Lu Ra and Nan Tsin were said to be sleeping in a church's premises when Burma Army soldiers entered. It's claimed they raped and beat the two women to death.

The church members reported the incident to the police, but they have taken no action.

CSW's Chief Executive, Mervyn Thomas, told Premier: "This tragic rape and murder of two young Christian Kachin teachers is yet another example of the continuing severe violations of human rights in Burma, the prevailing culture of impunity for the military, and the persistent and widespread use of rape and sexual violence by the Burma Army.

"We urge the international community to act to uphold the provisions of the Declaration to End Sexual Violence in Conflict and the UK's own Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative, and we call on the government of Burma to end the war against the Kachin people and engage in a genuine political dialogue and peace process."

Burma signed the Declaration to End Sexual Violence in Conflict last year. According to Christianity Solidarity Worldwide (CSW), Burma has failed to fulfil the requirements of this declaration.

The advocacy group is also urging the British government to send experts to Burma to investigate Lu Ra and Nan Tsin's rape and murder.
