Christian charity CSW makes religious freedom toolkit for MPs to raise awareness about persecution

by Hannah Tooley

Christian Solidarity Worldwide's resource includes information about countries that are home to persecuted minorities, such as Laos, China, Cuba, Pakistan and Iran.

It outlines freedom of religion or belief and gives information on a number of human rights treaties than can be used.

The toolkit also makes suggestions on how MPs can better reduce persecution, and it cites ideas like All Party Parliamentary Groups as well as written and oral questions.

Mervyn Thomas, from CSW, told Premier: "It's the sort of dummies guide to raising awareness in whatever their sphere of influence and will hopefully make a difference to those who really matter - those in prison, those that are persecuted, those families of those that have even been martyred for their faith."

"Part of it tells members... of both of the Houses of Parliament the technical ways they can raise parliamentary questions - and also the various statues that are used."

"We recently visited an atheist in prison in Indonesia - because he's in prison because he's an atheist - so we're standing up for all injustice, but of course the majority of people being persecuted around the world are Christians."
