A Christian British man has died, after being struck by Kenyan president William Ruto’s motorcade.
Edgar Riches, aged 79, was a regular worshipper at St Joseph and St Walburga's Church in Dorset.
He was frequently involved with fundraising for the Catholic aid charity, CAFOD.
Riches was in Nairobi visiting his sister and nephew, who are both Kenyan citizens.
He was hit by a driver at the rear of the convoy, and sustained injuries to his chest and head.
The convoy’s driver has now been apprehended into custody. He did not stop driving after the incident. Local police told Kenyan newspaper The Star that this was due to security reasons, as the president's car was close by.
Simon Giarchi of CAFOD Plymouth & South West said: “We were incredibly sad to hear of the death of Edgar Riches, an inspirational gentleman who fundraised relentlessly for CAFOD over decades. He was tireless in organising hundreds of charity events year after year, including one just days before his trip to Nairobi.
“Edgar was a kind and remarkable person who will be sorely missed. His efforts, via his Poole parish, to help tackle injustice and inequality around the world, will continue to make a difference to many communities living in poverty.”
