Chinese parents 'begging' for Christian schools

by Hannah Tooley

Returning from a trip to the Communist country, Sean Elgut from Veritas Christian Academy of Virginia says Chinese parents are open to their children learning about Jesus.

He said: "Chinese parents start to realise Christian education is beyond textbooks.

"The parents want their kids to live with faith.

"They are begging us to teach them about Jesus."

Leader: President Xi Jinping
Population: 1.4 billion, 97 million Christians
World Watch List Rank: 33
Source of Persecution: Communist oppression

Speaking to CBS News he said that he spoke to millennials who are learning about the Christian faith.

One of those embracing Christianity, Wang Zhao Yuan, said that his religious teachers had brought him to God.

"I also enjoy having one-on-one conversations with the teacher. When they prayed with me, I felt so much better.

"My heart didn't feel so heavy anymore," he said.

China Aid president Bob Fu said that people in China are "thirsty" to learn about the Gospel.

China ranks at 33 on Open Doors' World Watch List - a list of the worst countries in the world for Christian persecution.

The charity is concerned about the oppression of religious freedoms in the country, including the arrest of Christian leaders and lawyers defending religious rights and cross removals from churches.

Bob Fu went on to say that love is central to the Christian faith and that attracts many followers: "Under Communism, trust among the Chinese was destroyed.

"But the church was the opposite - Christians were the first ones to love those with disease and illnesses, the first ones to care about the elderly, the vulnerable, the children."
