Catholic Church celebrates World Mission Day

by Aaron James

This year's country of focus is Mongolia, which houses the youngest group of Christians in world.

Believers were not documented in the country until the fall of communism there in 1992.

The Bishop of Mongolia, Wens Padilla, is to celebrate a special Mass at Westminster Cathedral, to represent his Christian brothers and sisters back home.

Across the world, churches are praying for both local and international mission work, including the sharing of the Good News of Jesus Christ and helping the poor, sick and those affected by natural disasters and climate change.

Middlesborough Cathedral is one of them, and two local Catholic primary schools are coming to celebrate their first Mass, and offer gifts for the local foodbank and also Christians in Mongolia.

Very Revd Canon Monsignor Gerard Robinson, the Dean of Middlesborough Cathedral, told Premier: "I very much want them to see mission as part of their life, their work as a Christian. The mission of any Christian is, yes, to do things locally, but also have an eye for things on a worldwide basis.

"In this neck of the woods we've got the terrible news about the steel works closing and many people losing their work and their jobs and their livelihoods.

"So we know that the need is going to be great over these next few months, particularly as people prepare for Christmas."

And speaking about the Mongolian church, he said: "Their faith is very strong, even though it's a young church the faith is very strong.

"Suddenly all their livelihoods could just go because of the freezing conditions.

"I think it's important that we remember that this is where the church is, as well as where the church is in our own location."
