Ruth Hunt has temporarily been in the position at the gay rights group for six months but has now been given the permanent job.
In the past Ms Hunt has been a critic of the Catholic Church for its position on homosexuality.
Last year she called a decision to ban an RC church from carrying out gay masses a "real shame".
She's outlined her main priority as changing social attitudes towards LGBT people and creating equality.
She played a main role in the campaign for same sex marriage.
