Cathedral to distribute 10,000 Easter eggs

According to Russian news service Interfax, volunteers will paint the eggs in the lead up to Easter Saturday.

The eggs will then be presented to the Russian Orthodox Archbishop of Moscow Patriarch Kirill who will then bless them at the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour.

The traditional Easter gift will then be distributed at children's institutions in Moscow as part of the Basket of Kindness initiative organised by the charitable food foundation Rus.

Painted eggs - rather than chocolate ones - are the preferred Easter gift of choice in the Russian Orthodox Church.

Traditionally, the eggs are distributed by Christians to neighbours on Easter morning with the gift giver saying "Christ is risen!" and the gift recipient replying "Truly he is risen!".

During the reign of Tsar Alexey Mikhaylovich in the 17th century, 37,000 painted eggs were ordered for his Easter celebration. The eggs were sourced from hens, swans, pigeons and ducks. Some were made out of bone and glass.
