Cardinal gives 'ok' to gay group at US St Patrick's Day parade

A lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transsexual support group will march under a banner at the event held to celebrate the patron saint of Ireland.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan has said he continues to have confidence in the organisers and they have his 'support'.

Planners had been under pressure to include gay groups in the event including from the broadcaster NBC, which shows the event.

The marchers will be made up of its employees.

In a statement Cardinal Dolan said: "As I do each year, I look forward to celebrating Mass in honour of Saint Patrick, the Patron Saint of Ireland, and the Patron Saint of this archdiocese, to begin the feast, and pray that the parade would continue to be a source of unity for all of us."
