Call to remember catastrophic South Asia monsoon in wake of Hurricane Harvey

by Tola Mbakwe

Tearfund has expressed concerned for those in South Asia who've been hit by deadly monsoon rains.

Spokesman Steve Collins told Premier's News Hour: "We've not seen floods like this in the last ten years. There's been very heavy and prolonged and widespread monsoon rains across South Asia."

So far the storms have affected 41 million people and killed 1,200 people across Bangladesh, Nepal and India.

Jo Khinmaung-Moore, Tearfund's Senior Policy Adviser said while monsoons are typical for those countries around this time of year, the scale of flooding is much worse.

He added: "Usually water would fill up rivers and then overflow onto the floodplains. This year, water has not been able to flow away and drain as it would normally.

"People's homes are submerged in water and they are having to leave their villages in search of dry ground. Some villages have been cut off by the rising waters, leaving people stranded."

The organisation has partners on the ground distributing relief supplies as well as emergency food and water to the most vulnerable. It is also helping people reach evacuation points and operating health camps for victims.

Collins encouraged Christians to pray for the following:

  • Pray for the people who have been severely affected by flooding across South Asia.
  • Pray for safety for those whose homes, livestock, crops and livelihoods have been washed away.
  • Pray for wisdom in Tearfund's response to these devastating floods, that it would be able to reach those who are most in need.
