C of E campaigning for end to violence against women at UN

A Christian charity's raising concern over gender based violence in Zambia.

It's International Women's Day and 'US' is trying to give women there a greater voice.

Statistics show almost half of Zambian women experience some form of sexual or physical violence in their adult life.

Spokesperson Janette O'Neil told Premier's News Hour churches on the ground are taking part in a day of action:

Meanwhile, the Church of England is trying to lead the way on preventing violence against women.

A representative is at the UN Commission on the Status of Women in New York, promoting a campaign that's trying to educate boys and men on the issue through faith leadership.

And Twitter followers are being invited to celebrate International Women's Day by voting for their top Woman of the Bible.

The poll has been launched by Revd Carol Wardman, Bishops' Adviser for Church and Society.

She said, "We have the Woman of the Year and a Women's Power List so we would like to find the Woman of the Bible.

"From Ruth and Esther to Mary and the Samaritan woman - here's  a book packed with stories of inspirational women, showing their strength and resilience throughout the ages. "Now is our chance to celebrate them."

To nominate your favourite woman, tweet her name #WomanOfTheBible before Sunday.
