Bus company due in court over crash that killed Catholic schoolboy

by Tola Mbakwe

Midland Red (South) Ltd was charged with two health and safety law breaches after an inquiry into the deaths in Coventry city centre in October 2015.

Bus driver Kailash Chander, 79, appeared in court last week charged with causing the deaths of Catholic schoolboy Rowan Fitzgerald and 76-year-old Dora Hancox by dangerous driving.

Rowan was a pupil at St Anthony's Catholic Primary School in Leamington Spa and Hancox was a foster carer from Nuneaton.

They were both pronounced dead at the scene after the double-decker bus struck the side of a supermarket in Trinity Street.

Chander, from Leamington, has yet to enter a plea and is due back in court next month after being granted bail.

Representatives of his employer are scheduled to appear at Coventry Magistrates' Court.

Midland Red faces allegations of failing to discharge employers' duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act to employees and persons not in its employment.
