The campaign hopes to protect and maintain forests in the African country by planting one tree to represent each person in the country within the next five years.
The project is being supported by the Episcopal Relief and Development agency which has set up nurseries throughout the country.
Plans will see a million trees a year planted on private and public land.
Ceremonies to mark the launch took place in Muhuta commune in Rumonge province where Church leaders, Government representatives and civil society organisations met to plant trees alongside Lake Tanganyika.
Archbishop Martin Blaise encouraged those in attendance to act responsibly towards the environment.
