Britain should accept Christian and Muslim refugees, says Bishop Angaelos

by Desmond Busteed

Yesterday, Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said that the acceptance of so many Muslims from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere would erode Europe's Christian character.

"I couldn't as a Christian justify only letting Christians in. I think we need to look at people who are at greatest risk," said Bishop Angaelos on Premier's News Hour.

"If it be Christians then of course they need to be accommodated for or otherwise," added Angaelos.

David Cameron's promised to lay out the details of Britain's plans to take in more refugees next week.

The UN has said 4,000 Syrians from camps in the Middle East will be allowed to settle here.

A petition calling for the government to accept more asylum seekers has gained more than 350,000 signatures.

Bishop Angelos also dismissed claims that refugees fleeing conflict in the Middle East are undercover terrorists from Islamic State.

"To start to make a distinction between Christians and Muslims and start to make inferences that many people who could be coming in could be security threats and terrorists; that kind of extreme rhetoric is quite harmful." said Bishop Angaelos.

The Mirror and other media outlets have claimed extremists have posed as asylum seekers after travelling on boats trafficking people from Africa to Italy.
