Worship artist Brandon Lake appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America to perform “Hard Fought Hallelujah” on the same day that the network invited another guest: Maury Povich.
With the guest overlap, he used a moment during his pre-performance interview with host Lara Spencer to joke about a connection that people would least expect, reports Relevant Magazine.
Povich hosted the tabloid talk show Maury from 1991 to 2022, which frequently featured on-air DNA paternity tests revealing results to potential fathers.
“Me and Maury got something in common: We both tell people who the father is,” Lake said. “I’m here to tell them who the heavenly Father is.”
Spencer laughed what felt like a sigh of relief, admitting, “I was, like, holding my breath when you first said that.”
Lake responded, “I had to connect it somehow. I mean, who would think that me and Maury would be on the same show together? I think it’s awesome.”
The star’s appearance on the morning show follows the success of his new album, King of Hearts. The album has hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Christian and rock charts and earned him five Grammy nominations.
Before Lake performed “Hard Fought Hallelujah,” he said the song is a declaration of faith that doesn’t pretend everything is fine.
“[It’s about] still singing hallelujah even when you don’t feel it.”
