Bishops of Newcastle and Norwich take seats in House of Lords

by Kelly Valencia

Rt Rev Dr. Helen-Ann Hartley and Rt Rev Graham Usher have taken their seats in the House of Lords in a brief ceremony where they pledged their allegiance to King Charles III.

The clerics have now joined the Lord’s Spiritual, a group of 26 bishops who represent the Church of England in the upper chamber.

Bishop Helen-Ann, who was officially consecrated at Newcastle Cathedral earlier this year, received the support of her fellow female bishops from Derby and London during her introduction to the Lords.

Her ecclesiastical journey began when she was ordained as a deacon in the Diocese of Oxford in 2005, and a year later, she ascended to the priesthood.

Aside from her clerical pursuits, Bishop Helen-Ann is an avid runner and is happily married to Myles, a musician.

Bishop Graham, accompanied by the bishops of Southwark and London, took his place as the 72nd Bishop of Norwich in 2019.

With an academic background in ecology and a passion for beekeeping, he was appointed as the lead bishop on environmental matters by the Archbishop of Canterbury in June 2021.

Bishop Graham's theological studies at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, paved the way for his ordination as a deacon in 1996.

He is married to Rachel, a GP, and they are parents of two adult children.
