Bishop of Southwark calls for better rehabilitation in prisons following Streatham terror attack

by Ruth Sax

The Bishop of Southwark has called for more emphasis on rehabilitation in prisons.

Rt Rev Christopher Chessun spoke to Premier after Sunday's terror attack just a few hundred yards away from his home.

The Government said it would look at plans to limit the early release of terror offenders from jail.

Bishop Christopher, however, would like to see other changes.

"The issues will arise whenever terrorists, prisoners are released. The challenge is both the scrutiny [of the system] and about all the efforts being made to prevent radicalization in our prisons.

"More widely about rehabilitation as being an opportunity presented to equip them for returning to the community.

"More widely than anti-terrorist strategy, in the five significant prisons in my diocese, I see again and again, poor rehabilitation programs in place. Sometimes people literally being cast out onto the streets at the end of their prison sentences."

The Government is now pressing ahead with plans for emergency laws to keep terrorists behind bars for longer, by ending automatic release halfway through a sentence.
