Bishop of Birmingham calls for evil to be rooted out following Paris attack

Speaking from the House of Lords, where he's sitting this week, Rt Revd David Urquhart has been responding to Friday's terror attacks in Paris which saw 129 people killed.

When asked what he thought about the response to the attacks, he said: "We have to face up to the next stages of rooting out the evil which is perpetrated through what is called ISIL.

"The Prime Minister's statement today points out that it needs to be a comprehensive approach, military approach, counter terrorism approach and also an ideological approach.

"I think this is where Christians can help most in the local communities in making good personal relationships with those of other faiths and helping to explain how God and religion can promote peace and harmony.

His comments follow a speech by Prime Minister David Cameron to MPs in which he said Britain should attack the "head of the snake" in Syria.

Making the case for bombing Syria, he said: "Raqqa, if you like, is the head of the snake. Over Syria we are supporting our allies the US, France, Jordan and the Gulf countries with intelligence, with surveillance and with refuelling. But I believe, as I have said many times before, we should be doing more.

"We face a direct and growing threat to our country and we need to deal with it not just in Iraq but in Syria too."

Airstrikes can't go ahead without agreement from MPs, and previously Labour refused to back bombing Islamic State in Syria.
