The Bishop of Bangor has apologised to Virginia Crosbie MP, who says she was 'ridiculed' by a congregation member after attending church in May. 

On 30th May, the MP attended the Sunday service at St Cybi's church in Holyhead and offered advice privately afterwards on a fund to train new organists. 

An hour after she left, her team sent her a screenshot of an "offensive" post by someone else who attended the church, who accused her of "schmoozing" and said "who is she trying to kid?" regarding her offer of help. 

Crosbie wrote to the Bishop of Bangor, saying: "I have always held the Christian values of love, respect and kindness to be the most important, fundamental teachings of the Bible. 

"I am exceptionally disappointed therefore that my attendance, and subsequent discussion about how I can help the church, have been shared publicly in such a disrespectful, unkind and unchristian way"

She went on to say: "I was expecting to find spiritual support in my parish and I hope that in future my attendance at church will not be placed in the public domain and ridiculed."

Rt Rev Andy John replied with a letter of apology to Crosbie on behalf of the Church in Wales, saying "their behaviour was unkind and unacceptable".

"May I apologise unreservedly for the behaviour of someone who associates with the Church in Wales," he replied.

"We are addressing the specific behaviour with the individuals concerned and expect this not to happen again.

"More generally I am repeating my guidelines on appropriate use of social media and the Christian responsibility for tolerance and respect through my regular bishop's letter," he added.

Crosbie commented on Facebook in response to the apology: "I would like to thank the bishop for his actions and the wider Christian community on the island for their kindness. It's not a nice feeling to go to a church and then be treated in such an unchristian way. Let's hope the person who did this to me realises their mistake."
