Bishop: Church will come together after Stockholm attack

As police in Sweden question a man in connection with yesterday's lorry attack in Stockholm, a Church of England Bishop says the clergy will unite to offer help and support to the victims and their families.

The Rt Rev David Hamid serves the Church of England in Dioceses in Europe.

He's told Premier he's been in contact with colleagues there and they're understandably concerned:

"I have spoken to the priest in St Peter and St Sigfrid's Church in Stockholm, Nick Howe, and he says they are clearly alarmed that it seems to be a copycat attack, after Nice, Berlin and London.

"It just seems to be worrying people that this kind of attack seems to be prevalent now among those who wish to sow fear and terror among our people.

Bishop David went on:

"It (Stockholm) is a small and compact city, everybody instantly knows what and where it happened. It is not as extensive as London, where one thinks of neighbourhoods. The entire city is affected by this news.

When asked what the church can do Bishop David said:

"I think all we can do is be on hand to support those in shock and grief from this attack, particularly those directly affected;
relatives and families.

"Also, to be able to encourage people, as we enter Holy Week that we trust in our Lord who gave his life to reconcile people and bring peace on earth.

"I have written to the Bishop of Stockholm, Eva Brunne, to offer our support and the Swedish clergy will be on hand and will be very busy offering pastoral care and counsel to those affected."

Police are questioning a man on suspicion of "terrorist crimes through murder" after four were killed when a lorry mowed down pedestrians in the heart of Stockholm yesterday (Friday).

Children were among the 15 injured.
