Biden calls slavery America’s 'original sin'

by Lydia Davies

During a visit to Angola, the U.S. President referred to the nation's history of slavery as "our nation’s original sin".

Joe Biden was at the National Museum of Slavery, where he also toured local industries supported by U.S. investments and explored the Lobito Corridor, a trade route facilitating the export of materials from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia through Angola.

Reflecting on the founding ideals of the United States, Biden said: "The United States was built on the principle, as stated in our Declaration of Independence, that all men and women are created equal.

"It’s clear that we haven’t fully lived up to that ideal, but we have not abandoned it either."

According to CNN, Biden told the attendees that he’s proud to be the first president to visit Angola and that he’s “deeply optimistic” about the future relationship between the nation and the US.

He also stressed how “the United States understands how we invest in Africa is as important as how much we invest."
