Baptism photo nominated for top Sony prize

by Aaron James

The photo, called 'Georgian baptism', was taken at a church in the country's capital Tbilisi.

It was taken by Beniamino Pisati, an Italian freelance photographer, and has been selected for the Culture category in the Open shortlist in the Sony World Photography awards.

There are for shortlists in total: Professional, Open, Youth and Student Focus, all with different categories to be won within them.

Beniamino Pisati's photo appears to show the women in a mixture of excitement and distress as their child is baptised.

His picture comes after a video recently went viral in Georgia of its main Orthodox cathedral baptising children in a vigorous manner that some claimed was tantamount to child abuse.

If the photographer wins the whole Open shortlist, he'll get $5,000, Sony digital imaging equipment, flights and accommodation to the awards ceremony in London and be included in an exhibition at Somerset House, an esteemed art museum.
