Bake Off's Nadiya supports Blackburn Cathedral's flower show

Mrs Hussain, who won last year's series of the BBC programme, was presented with a bouquet of flowers at the Lancashire landmark which was joining in a town-wide festival hoping to regenerate the area, Countryside Comes to Town.

The married mother-of-three who follows Islam toured the festival and also signed copies of her new book on the Cathedral Green.

Organisers cleared the Cathedral of its regular furniture in order to house thousands of flowers for a display they say also helped raise money for good causes.

Speaking with Premier, artist director, Bill Dixon: "We have done a river of remembrance in the grounds of the Cathedral where we are raising money again for the charities. [Money] isn't all wasted. Lots of lots of the companies have sponsored in different ways to allow us to put the venue on.

"The sunlight is flowing through the Cathedral on all the flowers. The flower designs are enhanced by some of the coloured lights at the back of the Cathedral. It looks absolutely divine at the moment."

Described as a "floral extravaganza" and the biggest event in Blackburn Cathedral's history, organisers say the event took nearly two years to plan.
