Asylum offer to Iraqi Christians could make things worse, says Archbishop

Cardinal Philippe Barbarin of Lyon said it's a generous act but mean Iraq is left with no Christians at all.

Premier understands in the major city of Mosul, which was once a centre of Christianity in the country, there are now just 10 believer families left.

Many have been forced to flee their homes after Islamist militants threatened them with death.

The group ISIS, which has taken control of parts of Iraq, issued an ultimatum to them to pay a tax, convert to Islam, or be killed.

Speaking on Premier's MENA Analysis programme, international lawyer and church consultant Dr Harry Hagopian said the international community should be focussing on stopping the terrorist organisation.

"What are the powers going to do to those who fund ISIS or those who support ISIS and believe you me ISIS is support by a lot of people from within the region as well as outside.

"That is the question that needs to be addressed today."

You can hear more on Middle East North Africa Analysis on Thursday at 10pm on Premier Christian Radio.

Hear him tell Premier's Marcus Jones about the situation for Christians in Iraq here:

A Monthly Gift Of $11 Makes A World Of Difference

In a world of fake news there’s never been a greater need for quality Christian journalism. Premier’s mission is to provide the Church with the most up to date and relevant news, told from a Christian perspective. But we can’t do it without you.

Unlike many websites we haven't put up a paywall — we want to keep our journalism free at the point of need and as open as we can. Premier’s news output takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. No one in the USA is sharing news like we are across radio, magazines and online so please help us to continue that today.

For a monthly gift of $11 or more we’d also be able to send you a free copy of the brand new Premier Bible, a wonderful Anglicised version of the NLT packed with exclusive bonus content, reading plan and resources to help you get the most out of scripture.

Your monthly support will make a world of difference. Thank you.
