Argentine nuns accuse archbishop of 'gender violence'

by Kelly Valencia

A group of nuns in Argentina have come together to accuse an archbishop of gender-based psychological and physical violence.

The nuns of the San Bernardo Convent of Discalced Carmelites made an official complaint against Fr Mario Cargnello, the Archbishop of Salta in April. He denies all allegations.

As a result the Vatican sent a convoy led by Bishop Martín de Elizalde to look into the complaints, but he has now become a defendant in the case himself. Bishop Martin has been accused of consenting to the abuse.

On Tuesday, women from feminist groups gathered at the San Bernardo Convent to show solidarity with the 18 nuns, holding placards that read "Sister, I believe you".

A court hearing set for 3rd May was cancelled on Monday after the archbishop's defence said the his client was unable to attend the hearing as he had a meeting of the Episcopal Conference of Argentina outside Buenos Aires.

A future date for the hearing has not been set.
