Archbishop of Canterbury praying for UK in 'time of uncertainty', thanks Liz Truss for public service

by Tola Mbakwe

The Archbishop of Canterbury has thanked Liz Truss her for time as Prime Minister and says he's praying for her.

He tweeted on Thursday: "My prayers are with @trussliz and her family following her resignation, and I give thanks for her public service to our country. We should always be grateful to those who take on the great and difficult responsibilities of leadership.

"I pray also for those who continue to work in Government as they contemplate the many serious challenges ahead. I pray for our nation during this time of uncertainty."

Liz Truss quit on Thursday after the shortest, most chaotic tenure of any UK Prime Minister, forced out after the government's mini-budget shattered the country's reputation for financial stability.

The Conservative Party will now elect a new leader by 28th Oct, which will be the UK's fifth Prime Minister in six years.

That contest is likely to pit ex-finance minister Rishi Sunak against Penny Mordaunt, but could also see the return of Boris Johnson, who was ousted as prime minister in July when his ministers resigned en masse to force him out of office.

Christian Conservative MP for West Cornwall & the Isles of Scilly, Derek Thomas took to twitter to support Penny Mordaunt.

He wrote: "Although she wasn't my first choice, I supported Liz Truss because I believed she would deliver the growth this country needs.

"She herself accepted in her resignation speech that she will not be able to do so. My first choice for Prime Minister is again Penny Mordaunt. #PMforPM."

Tim Farron, a Christian and MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale, has joined calls for a general election.

He tweeted: "Our country deserves and desperately needs a government that is competent and compassionate - it is clear that the Conservatives are neither.

"This charade is only set to continue unless the people get their say in the form of a general election."

Liz Truss will remain as Prime Minister until a successor has been chosen.
