The Archbishop of Canterbury and Rev Nicky Gumbel are some of the most recognisable names in the Christian community to have been included in the 2024 New Year honours list.

The King has bestowed on Most Rev Justin Welby the Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order (RVO) for his role in making the coronation a success. The title is a personal gift from the monarch and given independently of the honours awarded by Downing Street.

The most senior cleric of the Church of England took to social media to express his gratitude for the award and said it “reflects the efforts of the amazing team behind the service”.

The Dean of Westminster, Very Rev Dr. David Michael Hoyle MBE, has also been awarded the Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order.

The other prominent name included in this year’s list is the former leader of Holy Trinity Brompton, Rev Nicky Gumbel. The 68-year-old has been awarded a CBE for his services to the Church of England.

Singer songwriter Sandra Godley has been decorated with an OBE for her charitable work in Coventry. She is also a trustee of Christians in Media and an ambassador and advocate for the charity AtaLoss, which helps bereaved people find support and wellbeing.

Speaking to Premier, Sandra said they news had not really “sunk in yet” but said the award is an encouragement to continue with her charitable work for many more years.

“I’m going to continue working with women who are looking to break the glass ceiling in the music industry. I'm passionate about that. And with young kids who just need that kind of help and hand on their shoulder to help them be who they naturally should be.

“And that is not just outside of church but inside of church as well. We've got churches run packed with gifted graded people. And I just want to encourage them to o what they need to do in their own style.”

More than 1,200 recipients have been included in the New Year Honours for their exceptional achievements, with a focus on those who have shown generosity to others in need.

This article will undoubtedly have missed some recipients from the Christian community. If you are aware of someone missing, please get in touch using the 'contact us' option in the menu.
