Archbishop Desmond Tutu released from hospital

Doctors say the 83-year-old will now recover from a "persistent infection" at home.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu

- Former Archbishop of Cape Town.
- Outspoken opponent of apartheid.
- Received Nobel Peace Prize in 1984.
- Diagnosed with Cancer is 1997.

He's been living with prostate cancer for the last 18 years, which his daughter says is well under control.

He was readmitted to hospital last week just days after being discharged.

In a statement released over the weekend, his charity Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation said: "Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu underwent a small investigative procedure last night to determine the status of an infection he has battled to shake off for several weeks.

"His medical team pronounced themselves satisfied with the progress of his antibiotic treatment, his daughter, the Reverend Canon Tutu said. He would remain in hospital for further observation and treatment for another few days.

"Although the cancer, itself, was under control, the infection was a consequence of past treatment that the Archbishop had received for prostate cancer, the Reverend Canon Tutu said.

"On behalf of the family, she again thanked everyone at home, on the continent and abroad whose prayers and support had sustained the Archbishop over the past several weeks. The family was very touched by the graciousness of the ruling party, opposition parties - and President Zuma, who had asked the nation to pray for her father, she said."
