The Archbishop of Canterbury has told congregants in Rome that she decries “terrible violence” against people living in conflict zones.
Most Revd Sarah Mullally is on a four-day pilgrimage, where she will meet and pray with the Pope. She is joined by the Catholic Archbishop of Westminster, Most Revd Richard Moth.
Speaking at St Paul’s Within the Walls Episcopal Church, the first non-Roman Catholic Church to be built in Rome, she said: “God did not make death... but created all things so that they might exist. God's desire is life - life in its fullness, life shared, life given.”
"And yet, we look at our world today… and we see terrible violence inflicted on innocent people in conflicts across the globe.”
Archbishop Sarah declared that: "In such a world, the Church cannot lose confidence in the Gospel.”
She spoke about the importance of valuing dignity for all people, including refugees.
“Life, not death, has the final word,” she concluded. “Christ has broken the power of violence, not by greater force, but by self-giving love."
The Archbishop will meet with the Pope for private prayer and discussion, before joining him in prayer at th Vatican’s Chapel of Urban VIII.
