Archbishop of Canterbury to miss Christmas services

by Donna Birrell

The Archbishop of Canterbury won't be taking part in any public Advent or Christmas services this year, despite remaining in his role until January.

Most Rev Justin Welby will spend the festive season privately with his family, following his November announcement of his resignation, citing failures in the Church’s response to abuse perpetrated by the late barrister John Smyth.

In a short statement on Wednesday, Lambeth Palace confirmed that Archbishop Justin's last day in post will be on the Feast of the Epiphany on 6th January. It says his main functions will be delegated to the Archbishop of York, Most Rev Stephen Cottrell, following his departure.

As Archbishop of Canterbury, he also has authority over 30 dioceses in the South of England and this responsibility will fall to the Bishop of London, Rt Rev Dame Sarah Mullally. The Bishop of Dover, Rt Rev Rose Hudson-Wilkin, will take responsibility for the Diocese of Canterbury.

The Archbishop of Canterbury has traditionally delivered a Christmas Day sermon from Canterbury Cathedral however this year Archbishop Stephen's sermon is likely to become the focus.

Archbishop Welby will also not deliver the traditional televised New Year message on New Year’s Day.

In a statement to Premier, the BBC confirmed the New Year message will resume next year  "when the new Archbishop of Canterbury has been appointed".
