Alabama Megachurch cuts ties with former pastor after accusations of sexual assault

by Premier Journalist

An Alabama megachurch pastor has resigned from his post after accusations arose online regarding him sexually assaulting his assistant in 2019.

Micahn Carter was a minister at the Church of the Highlands, a megachurch in Birmingham, Alabama. Carter had initially started his career at Together Church in Yakima, Washington. However, he would later resign from the post for unstated reasons, only to later be hired by the Church of the Highlands.

Now Carter appears to have resigned from his position after a blog post arose claiming that the pastor had engaged in sexually illicit conduct.

Carter's former assistant at Together Church, Mary Jones, posted a blog article alleging that Carter had assaulted her in April, after continuously engaging in sexually promiscuous behavior aimed at Jones.

Now the Church of the Highlands had announced that Carter and his wife, April, have resigned from their posts. "In 2019, Micahn Carter's Pastoral Overseers from Washington state asked Church of the Highlands to assist them in directing a ministerial restoration process for him," Church of the Highlands' staff told AL.com "Highlands agreed to do so, and since then we have been working with Micahn and his family. Recently, Highlands received correspondence raising new allegations about events that occurred over two years ago in Washington state. When we shared this information with the Carters, they resigned from their positions on staff to work through these issues themselves. Highlands is no longer involved in the restoration process."

Before the Church's public statement, an email leaked to Do Better Church, an Instagram run by church abuse survivors, asked staffers to not "engage" in the online conversation about Carter and instead direct questions to senior leaders.
