Hollywood star confirmed into Catholic Church after portraying saint in movie

by Donna Birrell

The actor Shia LaBeouf, who's starred in numerous box-office action film hits, has been confirmed into the Catholic Church.

The 37 year old who syas he was agnostic before finding God, was confirmed on New Year's Eve at a service at Old Mission Santa Inés Parish in Solvang, California, the Capuchin parish is where he first went to train for his role as a Franciscan friar in a film about “Padre Pio”.

In an interview last year, LaBeouf revealed that his portrayal of Padre Pio had led him to a love of the Catholic faith.

Padre Pio was a 20th-century saint known for his work with the poor and his great humility. Many miracles are attributed to him both during his life and after his death.

Last year after completing the film, LaBeouf said he had begun taking weekly formation classes and would be confirmed seven months later.

Announcing the news of his confirmation on social media, the Capuchin Friars' Western American Province said:

"We are thrilled to share that our dear friend Shia LaBeouf has fully entered the Church this past weekend through the sacrament of confirmation! The Capuchin Franciscan friars are overjoyed to welcome him into the fold and witness his deep commitment to his faith journey."

The post went on to say that the actor has "embarked on a profound spiritual journey that has led him to embrace the teachings of the Catholic Church. His decision to fully enter the Church is a testament to his sincere desire to grow in his relationship with God and live out the Gospel values.

"As Capuchin Franciscans, we believe in the transformative power of faith and the incredible impact it can have on one’s life. We are humbled and grateful to walk alongside Shia as he takes this important step in his spiritual journey.

We invite you to join us in celebrating this momentous occasion and to keep Shia LaBeouf in your prayers as he continues to deepen his faith and seek God’s guidance in his life."

The actor was confirmed by Bishop Robert Barron and his confirmation sponsor, Brother Alexander Rodriguez, told Catholic New Agency that the actor wants to become a deacon “sometime in the future.”

Shia LaBeouf found fame as an actor in films such as “Transformers", “Fury", and “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull”, but he has also courted controversy and been in trouble with the law multiple times. He is currently facing a lawsuit filed by his ex-girlfriend who has accused him of being physically abusive. A trial has been provisionally set for October 2024.
