Almost 8,000 dunked in one day at mass baptism event

by Lydia Davies

More than 7,750 people were baptised in the Pacific Ocean on Saturday 3rd May at Huntington Beach, California.

Organisers say it was the largest single-day baptism in American history.

Led by Pastor Mark Francey of Oceans Church, the Baptise California event brought together around 30,000 people from over 300 churches, as reported by The Christian Post.

Worship was led by Christian artists including Bethel Music, Kari Jobe and Cody Carnes.

Francey told the crowd: “You were part of the largest water baptism in American history.

“Who thinks that God could do it in the other states of America?”

The initiative, now in its second year, exceeded last year's turnout of 6,000.

The next event, set for Pentecost Sunday (8th June), aims to involve churches from all 50 states in what organisers hope will be “the largest synchronised baptism in history.”

Among those baptised was 71-year-old Joanne, who shared that she had considered baptism for 40 years.

Francey, who says the vision came to him in prayer two years ago, stressed the goal is not just numbers but long-term spiritual growth.

“Our heart was to unite the local church… The win isn't the count of how many got baptised, really, it's going to be how that translates into how we are getting people connected to the local church.”
