8-year-old boy dies from injuries suffered at US Christmas parade attack, church announces

by Kelly Valencia

A church in the US state of Wisconsin has confirmed that an 8-year-old boy member of the congregation has passed away from injuries sustained during the Waukesha Christmas parade attack.

Jackson Sparks, 8, and his brother Tucker Sparks, 12, were among the more than 60 people injured during the attack on Sunday that saw an SUV ploughed into a Christmas parade killing five people at the time.

On Tuesday, Jackson Sparks "succumbed to his injuries" and passed away, his family said in a statement posted on LifePoint church's Facebook page.

It read: "Aaron Sparks and Sheri Sparks would like to thank everyone for your prayers and amazing support during this difficult time.

"They wanted to give an update to everyone as you are likely aware, Tucker and Jackson Sparks were both seriously injured during the Waukesha Christmas Parade attack and have been in the ICU since.

"This afternoon, our dear Jackson has sadly succumbed to his injuries and passed away."

A Catholic priest and several members of the Catholic community of Waukesha were also hospitalised for injuries.

The family also gave an update on their son, Tucker, who is "miraculously recovering from his injuries" and will be discharged soon.

It continued: "Please know that they appreciate your continued prayers and tremendous outpouring of support for their family. They do however ask for privacy at this time to allow Tucker to continue to heal physically and their family to heal and mourn the tremendous loss of their sweet little boy who is now under the care of Jesus."

At least 13 children remain hospitalised, with six of them in a critical condition.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the Sparks family pay medical and funeral expenses.
