43 gritting lorries getting a bishop's blessing

by Glyn Jones

A fleet of 43 gritting lorries and 29,000 tonnes of salt are being blessed by the Bishop of Grimsby.

The ceremony, at Lincolnshire Council's depot in Sturton by Wold is part of the local authority's preparations before the start of this year's icy weather.

The Bishop of Grimsby, the Right Revd. Dr. David Court, says the blessing highlights the important work of gritting teams across the UK to keep people safe.

"All of us rely on the road network in the winter. There are those who are working hard when we're sleeping to decide where to grit and when to grit. And so we're asking for God's blessing upon that work."

The bishop believes God's blessing does not absolve people of the responsibility of people to drive carefully.

"I hope that the prayer itself is important and that God will honour that prayer. But it's also a reminder of our responsibility … to take care and to drive responsibly."

Bishop David believes blessing gritters is an example of how churches can be visible in the community. He believes clergy should find new forms of outreach which might include offering blessings in a range of unusual environments outside of churches and cathedrals.

"This is a God who's involved in every part of human life. Do we want God to bless all of those who work to keep us safe and to enable us to live? Of course we do."
