40 test positive for coronavirus following German church service

by Marcus Jones

A church service in Frankfurt, Germany is being blamed for a spread of coronavirus.

According to the city's health department, more than 40 people contracted Covid 19 after attending a worship service at Gospel Christians Baptist Church on 10th May.

"Most of them are not seriously ill. As far as we know only one person has been admitted to hospital," Rene Gottschalk from the health department told the dpa agency.

There's no evidence of any wrongdoing from the church.

Churches in Germany have been free to hold services since the beginning of the month as long as they adhere to official social distancing and hygiene rules.

Singing is also prohibited.

The development comes as Donald Trump said churches in the US were now free to hold public worship, deeming them "essential services".

In the UK, the government said churches wouldn't be allowed to re-open until July "at the earliest". It has brought together a taskforce to oversee the issue of places of worship chaired by communities secretary Robert Jenrick. Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, leader of Catholics in England and Wales Cardinal Nichols and Daniel Singleton from Faith Action network are all part of the group.
