Tanveer Ahmed, 32, from Bradford, was sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow after admitting the murder of Asad Shah in Glasgow in March.
Police have said his attack on Mr Shah was "religiously prejudiced" however it is not because of his reference to Christianity on Facebook (below), but because he was a member of the Ahmadiyya branch of Islam.
Some Muslims perceive Ahmadiyyas as heretics because of their view that Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, a 19th-century thinker, was a prophet sent by God - something the other branches of Islam reject.
Mr Ahmed claimed to have been offended by clips Mr Shah had posted online which he said "disrespected the Prophet Muhammad".
Hundreds of people attended a vigil after Asad Shah's murder in the Shawlands area of Glasgow and both Christians and Muslims attended his funeral.

The Rev Val Duff, minister of South Shawlands Parish Church close to where Asad Shah's shop was, said at the time: "Like many people I am deeply saddened to hear of Asad Shah's death.
"He was obviously a deeply loved man in our community."
