Amid controversy over perceived mockery of Christian symbolism during the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris, 16-year-old Brazilian skateboarder Rayssa Leal proudly expressed her Christian faith.
After securing the bronze medal in the women's street skateboarding final on Sunday 28th July, Leal used sign language to quote John 14:6, as shared in a video by Dom Lucre on X.
"Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me,'" the Scripture reads.
French Olympians must adhere to secularism principles, barring them from displaying religious symbols while representing their country. However, the International Olympic Committee allows athletes in Paris to represent themselves, their faith, and their nation. "For the Olympic Village, the IOC rules apply," an IOC spokesperson told Reuters. "There are no restrictions on wearing the hijab or any other religious or cultural attire."
In 2021, Leal became Brazil's youngest Olympian at aged 13, winning the silver medal in the skateboarding street competition. On Sunday, her performance earned her the second-highest score of 92.88, propelling her from fifth to third place.
"When I was very young, I dreamed of becoming a skateboard athlete," Leal told reporters. "And here I am, with a second Olympic medal from the games. Once again, thank God I won a medal. I'm very happy to be here."
