Zohran Mamdani shares Bible verse after Palm Sunday service

by Anna Rees Green

The Mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani, has described attending a Palm Sunday service as “an honour,” and reminded followers that “faith without works is dead”.

Mamdani, who is a Muslim, joined the congregation at Greater Allen Cathedral in New York for the service.

“As James 2:14 reminds us, ‘faith without works is dead,’” he shared with his 1.9 million X followers. “That message calls on all of us to build a better city. A New York where dignity is not a privilege, but a promise. Where government shows up for people with respect.”

Mamdani added that he wanted New York to be a place “where faith is nurtured by justice, and freedom is abundant”.

“Wishing a blessed Palm Sunday to all New Yorkers observing this sacred day,” the mayor said.

It is not the first time Mamdani has joined New York’s Christian community. After his shock electoral victory in 2025, Mamdani shared a video of a dozen pastors laying hands on him and praying for the Holy Spirit to “strengthen and guide” him.

Madani said the prayer was "humbling".
