Young boys charged with arson of County Antrim church

by Anna Rees Green

Three boys have been charged with arson after a large fire at a church in County Antrim.

Two of the boys were aged 11, and one was as young as 10.

The Church of the Holy Name, Greenisland, was set ablaze on the 1st September.

Damage was done to both the church and the parish hall on Station Road.

Nine fire engines and 49 firefighters were called to bring the blaze under control.

No one was harmed in the incident.

Rev Dr Izzy Hawthorne-Steele said she was "totally devastated".

"I’m not angry I’m just thankful that we are a people that can trust on God to bring us through this," she said.

"I call upon those who started [the fire] to come and talk to us. I feel for them.”
