'We're walking but need to be running' to tackle climate change says Christian campaigner

by Donna Birrell

As tens of thousands of people take part in marches across the UK and the world to make their voices heard about climate change, Premier caught up with Christian campaigner for Tearfund, Laura Young who’s joined the global day of action :

“We’re here in Glasgow in Kelvingrove Park and there are people with amazing banners, people from around the world. It’s amazing to be joining thousands across the city.

“I’m here with Tearfund and we are in a faith walk. There are so many Christian organisations and other faiths and beliefs here. You can see so many people from different walks of life and with different things that they are passionate about. We all realise we are here together in solidarity with people who are impacted by climate change around the world. But also people that care about this enough to demand change during this United Nations Climate Summit.

“There have been some great things (at the conference) so far - we've had pledges to do with deforestation, reducing methane, getting rid of coal, fossil fuels and some finance, but we know that this still does not align with the 1.5 degrees of warming we need to stay below and that 1.5 degrees is the difference between life and death for many around the world.

“It's the difference between suffering and surviving. So we need to keep pushing world leaders and delegates during this next week. Hopefully this march is setting that tone, showing that it's great progress, but we need to be running and we are just walking out the moment.”

“As Christians, please pray for the people who are here - for safety, you can pray for world leaders who are deciding things throughout this next week, you can pray for the decisions at the rest of COP26.

“You can also intercede and pray for our global neighbours who are at the front of this crisis, many countries around the world. You can also get active in your local community, on social media.

“There are so many ways that you can support even if you're at home today.”

Unlike many websites we haven't put up a paywall — we want to keep our journalism free at the point of need and as open as we can. Premier’s news output takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. No one in the USA is sharing news like we are across radio, magazines and online so please help us to continue that today.

For a monthly gift of $11 or more we’d also be able to send you a free copy of the brand new Premier Bible, a wonderful Anglicised version of the NLT packed with exclusive bonus content, reading plan and resources to help you get the most out of scripture.

Your monthly support will make a world of difference. Thank you.
